Why do audiologist test hearing with ear plugs?

Question by Love, Mona: Why do audiologist test hearing with ear plugs?
She stuck an ear plug in my right ear and tested my hearing with ear phones with a tone. Why? How does this determine anything because she purposely occluded my right ear…so what’s the point?

That technique can be used to tell if someone is faking a hearing loss. Certain results are expected when one ear is occluded. If the expected result does not occur, you can tell the person is faking the hearing loss.
