What are the list of things to check before accepting a second hand car?
Question by Satheesh: What are the list of things to check before accepting a second hand car?
Our family will be accepting a second hand car soon(Hyundai Accent 1.5A). Please advise what are the things we need to check before accept the car. I would greatly appreciate if there is any checklist available in the net that would aid us in the process. Please help us so that I will not be conned by the dealer.

Take the car to a trusted mechanic. Ask them to go over it with a fine tooth comb and be prepared to spend about a 100 dollars. I believe AAA has a list. I would ask the dealer to see the list they used to check the car and then take it to your mechanic to see if they really checked it. I usually spend between 1 and 2 hours depending on the car and options. Most good technicians can tell if a car is worth buying within half an hour. Have them take it for a test drive. A car is a big investment and 100 dollars is cheap insurance. Good luck.

I will give you a link to The Auto Evaluator. It’s a free website that has 7 checklists available for you to print out and bring with you when you go to look at the car. The website has pictures, a walk through, and tips on how to spot scams, such as someone disconnecting the check engine light.
I developed the program in 2003 and it’s been a work in progress. I update it when I hear of a new things to watch out for. Good luck and I hope this is what you are looking for.
