Q&A: Is a doctors code the diagnosis or what is suspected? Hearing loss?

Question by J-bug: Is a doctors code the diagnosis or what is suspected? Hearing loss?
My son had a hearing evaluation done the first on August. They got fair responses as he is three. The audiologist wanted to retest in a month. We retested the end of August. He had a meltdown and did not participate so now we have a sedated ABR hearing test coming up.I got both evaluations results. At the top there is a number 1. Unspecified hearing loss (389.9)

Is this their diagnosis? Or what they are testing for, for billing purposes?

In your son’s case, it sounds like the latter, since you don’t have a definitive diagnosis yet.

They use the codes both for diagnosed conditions and for tests to “rule out” these conditions. (IDK why “rule out,” that just seems to be the way they phrase it.)
