Are sales quotas appropriate in clinical settings?

Question by K: Are sales quotas appropriate in clinical settings?
For example, if an independent audiology practice requires each physician to sell 10 hearing aids during each pay period; their pay is docked if they do not meet the quota and receive a bonus if they exceed it. Is this appropriate in a medical setting? Do you think there are any ethical concerns?

Yes, it is certainly inappropriate and unethical (in the normal sense of the word) for this to take place. That doesn’t mean that there are written rules about this situation or that there would be any enforcement.
